Canada recognizes the importance of family and spousal support for its citizens and residents, therefore, the Government of Canada has a strong commitment to keeping families together whenever possible. Processing of Family Class Spousal applications is a high priority at Canadian Visa Offices. Canadian citizens or Permanent residents living in Canada can sponsor a spouse or common-law partner who lives in Canada or outside Canada under the Spouse and Common-Law Partner including same-sex marriages.

Eligibility of sponsored person:

• Must prove that he/she is legally married with Sponsor;
• Must be at least 16 years old;
• Must not be inadmissible to Canada.

Common-law partners must cohabit continuously for at least one year, excluding brief absences for business or family reasons.

Sponsors and sponsored spouses must prove that their relations are genuine, in other words that is not a “marriage of convenience”.
